Things Movers Can’t Move

This may sound strange, but there are actually some items we aren’t legally allowed to move! Most of these things are safety hazards, but some are just against our company policies for one reason or another. Before you start packing up your belongings, make sure you know what our movers can’t load onto our trucks:

Firearms and Gun Safes

Due to New York City law, we aren’t allowed to have possession of a gun that we don’t own—even temporarily for a simple relocation across town. Similarly, we cannot load a gun safe into our vehicles, because we have to assume they contain firearms. For your safety, we suggest referring to your gun license and handbook before moving so you know your legal responsibilities during your move. In addition to firearms and their cases, we also can’t move explosives (including fireworks), ammunition, or gunpowder.

Medications

Whether you need to move prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs, we can’t take these in our moving trucks. In the worst case scenario, we want to make sure we don’t cause you any medical harm if you can’t access your medications when needed. Please make sure these drugs don’t accidentally make it into your boxes as you pack up other shelves near your medicine cabinet!

Flammable Chemicals

We are completely able to move some cleaning supplies, such as your mops, brooms, and buckets. However, we can’t move any flammable chemicals, which are typically found in cleaning solutions such as Lysol and Mr. Clean products. Additionally, we can’t move anything stored in a pressurized can (such as hairspray and insect spray), alcoholic drinks, or room fresheners (such as Glade plug-ins). These chemicals can be moved in your personal vehicle, but we don’t want to risk anything spilling on the rest of your belongings and jeopardizing everything you own in our trucks.

Gasoline

Technically, gasoline is a flammable chemical, but it can be forgotten easily during the hustle and bustle of Moving Day so it gets its own category. If you need us to move a lawnmower, gas grill, motorcycle, or anything else which is fueled by gasoline, we need you to completely empty the gas tank before we can place it on the truck. Unfortunately, our movers can’t do this for you, so make sure you plan ahead!

Corrosive Materials

Corrosive substances, such as acid, can severely damage other items we move for you, or even cause injury to our movers and you. We can’t move batteries, laundry detergent containing sodium hypochlorite, mouthwash, furniture and car polish, or rat poison because of their corrosive components. Another common corrosive household item? Batteries! Please remove these from your electronics and toys before we move them.

Anything Living

Unfortunately, we aren’t able to store anything living in the back of our trucks. This includes plants, full aquariums, and any type of pets. While we do our best to make sure everything is secure during transit, we can’t guarantee that something won’t shift during the drive to your new home and harm your plants or pets. Also, in the middle of summer and winter, the back of our trucks can get extremely hot or cold. Most living things can’t survive these temperatures.

Uncrated Fragile Items

Although we sell a myriad of specialty boxes to protect everything from your big-screen TV to your mirrors, there are some things that need to be custom-crated before they can be safely moved. These include awkwardly-shaped pieces of artwork, fragile antique decor items, and pieces of granite and other stone. Also, if you need a pool table moved, we highly recommend having the slate top crated before being moved. The slate is extremely heavy and fragile, so one slip could cause it to shatter.

Fully-Assembled Grandfather Clocks

Although we love moving cool pieces of furniture such as grandfather clocks, it’s not safe to move them without having the weights and pendulum taken out first. We aren’t certified clockmakers, so we don’t feel comfortable removing these ourselves. If you aren’t experienced in taking these pieces out of your clock, we recommend calling a local clockmaker to do it for you.

Perishable Food

Some perishable food items are safe to move if we’re only moving you within the same city or to another nearby location. However, we definitely encourage you to use up or give away perishable foods before Moving Day to avoid damaging the other items we move for you. Frozen foods could thaw and cause water damage to other belongings, and some perishable foods will rot and cause your things to smell.

Cash and Valuables

In the worst case scenario, such as a natural disaster or terrible accident, most things are replaceable. We have a great insurance policy which protects you against most risk. However, there are some sentimental items, important documents, valuable jewelry, and cash we know you would hate to lose. For this reason, we highly recommend you store these belongings in a safe place in your own personal vehicle.
