Historically, Cobble Hill was a war zone. During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers used the eponymous hill as a fort and leveled the top so that they could not be spied upon from above. Known at the time of America’s War of Independence as Cobble Hill Fort, the base would again be used during another conflict. For the War of 1812, Cobble Hill Fort was renamed Fort Swift and given an overhaul to fortify it in anticipation of going to battle against the British soldiers.
With charming streets and historic architecture protected by the National Register of Historic Places, Cobble Hill’s trendy atmosphere attracts new residents, foodies, and nightlife denizens.
Foodies and nightlife thrill seekers call Smith Street’s Restaurant Row home. Smith Street has been credited as having given birth to the Brooklyn foodie culture. That said, there are still plenty of dining options on Smith Street.
For food and drinks, local favorites include Battersby, Vinny’s, and Clover Club.
Battersby’s creative fine dining offerings and beautiful artful plating make this not only a great romantic place to take a date, but a great spot for food that is as gorgeous as it is yummy. Their tasting menu is absolutely not to be missed! Since Battersby is on the smaller side with only six tables, we advise making a reservation. And while it never quite quiets down, we hear Sundays are a bit slower, making snagging a table a bit easier. For something a bit more dressed down and family friendly, Vinny’s is the place to go. Vinny’s Italian menu has all the basics you’d expect from a solid Italian joint, and they do it well and affordably. If you’re looking for a great drink, Clover Club has the best cocktails in the neighborhood which they pair with delicious food and a cozy old-timey atmosphere. Clover Club has jazz every Wednesday evening, but on the weekends their brunch is amazing–especially the Bacon Tasting!
For those with a sweet tooth, head to the Cobble Hill outpost of world famous Milk Bar for confections that are as pretty as they are sweet.
Milk Bar’s baker in chief and Masterchef judge, Christina Tosi, has cultivated a cult-like following for her unique and incredible confections. Christina is most famous for creating cereal milk ice cream, compost cookies, and crack pie, but it seems every creation she rolls out becomes a cult favorite among her fans. Tosi has been honored with praise and awards from publications like The new York times, Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine. It seems that everything Christina bakes up becomes a smashing success!
