Taking its name from “Triangle Below Canal Street,” Tribeca is a trapezoidal neighborhood bound by Canal Street, Broadway, West Street, and Chambers or Vesey Streets. Originally the first residential neighborhood to be developed outside of New York City’s traditional boundaries during the colonial era, by the mid-19th century, business began moving in transforming into a major commercial hub within NYC. Spurred on by New York City’s subway construction during the 1850s and 1860s–namely what are known today as the 1, 2, and 3 trains–which made the Tribeca especially accessible to not only transit riders but to vehicles as well. You could say getting moving in Tribeca was always important to locals.
As the industrial center of Tribeca moved out in the 1960s, artists flocked to the area making it their own well through the 1970s.
The abandoned lofts were converted into studios and galleries drawing sculptors, photographers, painters, and artists of all stripes moving to Tribeca for the burgeoning artistry culture. Even now, you’ll still find the celebrated works of notable artists in the galleries in Tribeca. However, when developers moved into Tribeca in the 1980s they created the upscale residential neighborhood that Tribeca is today. (zip code 10013)
Tribeca was both physically and economically damaged during the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 but recovered with the aid of government grants and incentives and a little celebrity star power as well.
The eponymous Tribeca Film Festival rose from the ashes of this national tragedy to aid in the financial and emotional recovery of the area by bringing artists together to boost revenue to downtown Manhattan and the morale and spirits of its residents. Importantly, the Tribeca Film Festival also celebrates New York City as one of the world’s leading filmmaking centers. With Tribeca serving as a popular location for movies and TV shows to film, New Yorkers consider the Tribeca Film Festival to be a great time to come together to celebrate their city.
By the time that the Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff, Tribeca was already one of New York City’s most desirable and fashionable neighborhoods to move to and live in.
A favorite hub for celebrities, there are many notable famous faces who call New York City’s Tribeca home and move here for its rich offerings. From actors, directors, and models, to musicians, athletes, celebrated writers, talk show hosts–and even the Kennedy’s–Tribeca is a veritable hotspot for celebrities of all types. Debra Messing, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lena Dunham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Poehler, Uma Thurman, Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus, Meryl Streep, Scarlett Johansson, Robert De Niro, and Daniel Radcliffe are among the actors have all moved to Tribeca and now call the area home.
And the most New York of New York actors, Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay, lives in Tribeca so clearly Tribeca is the place to be in New York City!
These celebrated actors who call this tony New York City neighborhood home are joined by musicians Beyonce & Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Chris Martin, The Edge, Taylor Momsen, Taylor Swift, and Justin Timberlake. Many models have also moved to Tribeca including Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss, Adriana Lima, Christy Turlington, and Petra Nemcova. And where you find models, you often find athletes. Among them Derek Jeter, Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards, and Mike Piazza. With so many stars living in the area it’s no wonder there’s a certain sparkle to Tribeca that attracts people from all over the city–and all over the world–to move to this fabulous Manhattan neighborhood.
Given that Tribeca is a favorite amongst celebrities, the dining scene is unparalleled.
From cozy brunch spots that attract lines out the door on weekends and cozy family dining spots to hip watering holes and Michelin starred restaurants, there’s something delicious for all palettes in this upscale neighborhood. For brunch head to Bubby’s where residents and New Yorkers from all over the city say the long wait for a table for a boozy brunch is well worth it. For dinner, Locanda Verde is very popular and you know its chef Andrew Carmellini must churn out amazing dishes if he was commissioned by Robert De Niro himself to come open up this world class eatery.
For another Robert De Niro favorite, Tribeca Grill, you can check out the restaurant which he partially owns (featuring paintings of his father, Robert Sr.) for more classic fare.
We hear the impressive wine list itself at Tribeca Grill is enough reason to head over to this Tribeca staple. For a more fancy meal–and Michelin starred–head to Atera, the brainchild of chef Ronny Emborg. Assuming you can secure a reservation, the creatively phenomenal American cuisine prix fixe menu delights (and changes seasonally) as you sit at the kitchen-facing counter for a truly “immersive sensory dining experience.”
If it’s a drink you’re after, Tribeca has a wonderful array to choose between.
