Why move the hard way when you can move the Divine way?
The East Village is made up of three neighborhoods: Alphabet City, the Bowery, and Little Ukraine. While Alphabet City was once known as one of the seediest and most dangerous slum neighborhoods in New York City, it is now considered to be the epitome of downtown cool. Deriving its name from the only single-letter avenues in NYC (A, B, C, and D), Alphabet City saw a wave of gentrification in the 1990’s and early 21st century. After renovations of previously abandoned storefronts into apartments, nightclubs, restaurants, and retail establishments, what was once a bohemian artists colony saw crime rates drop, rent increase, and more affluent residents move in.
The characters from Jonathan Larson’s beloved musical Rent, which takes place in Alphabet City, would hardly recognize the neighborhood they called home in the classic rock opera. Today, the East Village is a safe and thriving neighborhood full of entertainment, dining, and shopping options.
During the 19th Century, Bowery, derived from the Dutch word bouwerij meaning ‘farm,’ was a farmland that burgeoned into a residential utopia rivaling Fifth Avenue. It was only after the Civil War that its more affluent residents fled allowing brothels, German beer gardens, low-brow concert halls, flophouses, and pawn shops to move into the Bowery. Bowery became known for prostitution (rivaling the Tenderloin), homelessness, and alcoholism. During this period, Bowery was synonymous with New York City’s Skid Row and its residents were referred to as the Bowery Bums. People moving to Bowery, however, will no longer find the slum it was known to be for much of its history.
Like its enclave Alphabet City, the 21st century brought a wave of gentrification including high-rise condos and luxury apartments enticing people to moving to the East Village to relocate in Bowery sweetening the deal with the installation of luxury supermarket, Whole Foods.
When moving to the East Village, there’s so much to see, so much to do, and of course, so much to eat and drink! While there’s always plenty of nightlife, live comedy, and other cultural events to appeal to every age and taste, they change so often that we recommend you head online to find out what’s going on at any given time. Many foodies and dive bar enthusiasts move to the East Village just for the sheer volume of amazing options behind every door and around every corner.
The fabulous food and delicious drinks (and the nightlife that come with it) in the East Village are a huge pull for New Yorkers of all stripes who delight in the cornucopia of options available in this New York City neighborhood.
For brunch, many East Villagers will brave the sometimes more than hour long line for Prune. Hailed as creative French cooking at its best, it’s their 11 kinds of Bloody Mary’s that keep the line long on weekends. Another place still draws lines down the block years after opening, is Momofuku Milk Bar run by pastry magician Christina Tosi. Her cultish confections are absolutely divine and well worth the wait. From compost cookies, cake truffles, pies, and cakes, it’s Milk Bar’s milk shakes and ice cream sandwiches that draw crowds from around the city and tourists from around the world.
Another sibling in the Momofuku empire (and the most expensive!), Momofuku Ko is one of the best restaurants in the East Village–if you can get a reservation.
Watch as your chef-servers prepare your Michelin star rated prix-fixe meal behind the glass containing the kitchen, earning Momofuku Ko the No. 58 ranking of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. We told you–the food in the East Village is unparalleled! For sushi, Jewel Bako is the place to go. We recommend going with the chef’s choice omakase. You can never go wrong when you let the chef pick the freshest and best offerings of the day and at Jewel Bako they never disappoint.
For authentic Mexican fare with a downtown flair, check out Rosie’s.
East Villagers head to Rosie’s not only for the extensive food menu but for the fabulous margaritas (which you can get by the pitcher, so bring your friends–unless you don’t like sharing, we certainly won’t judge!) and tequila and mezcal tasting flights. If tasting flights are your thing, you can also head over to Amor y Amargo, where you’ll not only find an amazing bitters tasting room with phenomenal drinks to make you dizzy with delight.
With so many entertainment and dining options, it’s no wonder people from all over New York City and the world move to the East Village.
