Divine does it right the first time, so you can get back to worrying about more important things–like where the best brunch place is near your new home.
Originally an outgrowth of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill attracts families and busy professionals looking for a homey small-town feel in the bustling metropolis of New York City. Sandwiched between Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights to the south and north, with Boerum Hill to the east and Columbia Street Waterfront District to the west, Cobble Hill’s convenience to Manhattan and other Brooklyn neighborhoods make it a popular destination for people of all ages.
With a distinctively 19th Century feel, Cobble Hill, like its progenitor Brooklyn Heights, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Brooklyn (11201 zip code).
Along with Brooklyn Heights, most of Cobble Hill is protected as a historic district; but that doesn’t mean the architecture in the area is entirely homogenous. Along with the brownstones the area is famous for rise Gothic Revival churches and Victorian school houses, some of which have been converted into co-ops and condominiums in this historic zone. Historically, Cobble Hill was a war zone. During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers used the eponymous hill as a fort and leveled the top so that they could not be spied upon from above. Known at the time of America’s War of Independence as Cobble Hill Fort, the base would again be used during another conflict. For the War of 1812, Cobble Hill Fort was renamed Fort Swift and given an overhaul to fortify it in anticipation of going to battle against the British soldiers.
With charming streets and historic architecture protected by the National Register of Historic Places, Cobble Hill’s trendy atmosphere attracts new residents, foodies, and nightlife denizens.
Foodies and nightlife thrill seekers call Smith Street’s Restaurant Row home. Smith Street has been credited as having given birth to the Brooklyn foodie culture. Some even go so far as claim that Smith Street was central to shaping the consciousness of the foodie movement which emphasizes sustainability, using locally sourced food, and organic eating practices. However, in recent years independent restaurants and mom and pop shops have been fighting off the next wave of gentrification. These independently owned eateries and stores have slowly but surely been replaced by chains and well known corporate enterprises such as Starbucks and Lululemon. Between rent hikes and national brands moving in, many residents say Restaurant Row isn’t what it once was. However, nearby Court Street has attracted many great surrogates to replace the restaurants and businesses that once populated Smith Street. While some long-term residents are concerned over the ebbing culinary tide on Smith Street, others are thrilled that they now have more convenient shopping options. In addition to Lululemon, shopping options on Smith Street for those moving to Cobble Hill include Lucky Brand, Intermix, and luxury eyeglass store Anne & Valentin. That said, there are still plenty of dining options on Smith Street.
For food and drinks, local favorites include Battersby, Vinny’s, and Clover Club.
Battersby’s creative fine dining offerings and beautiful artful plating make this not only a great romantic place to take a date, but a great spot for food that is as gorgeous as it is yummy. Their tasting menu is absolutely not to be missed! Since Battersby is on the smaller side with only six tables, we advise making a reservation. And while it never quite quiets down, we hear Sundays are a bit slower, making snagging a table a bit easier. For something a bit more dressed down and family friendly, Vinny’s is the place to go. Vinny’s Italian menu has all the basics you’d expect from a solid Italian joint, and they do it well and affordably. If you’re looking for a great drink, Clover Club has the best cocktails in the neighborhood which they pair with delicious food and a cozy old-timey atmosphere. Clover Club has jazz every Wednesday evening, but on the weekends their brunch is amazing–especially the Bacon Tasting!
For those with a sweet tooth, head to the Cobble Hill outpost of world famous Milk Bar for confections that are as pretty as they are sweet.
Milk Bar’s baker in chief and Masterchef judge, Christina Tosi, has cultivated a cult-like following for her unique and incredible confections. Christina is most famous for creating cereal milk ice cream, compost cookies, and crack pie, but it seems every creation she rolls out becomes a cult favorite among her fans. Tosi has been honored with praise and awards from publications like The new York times, Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine. It seems that everything Christina bakes up becomes a smashing success!
Brilliantly, Milk Bar also packages and ships their sweets around the world so everyone can have a bite. This means, even if you don’t move to Cobble Hill moving, you can still order Milk Bar’s amazing cookies, truffles, and cakes to your door–whether you’re in Brooklyn or the world beyond. Getting in on the sweetness of helping others, supermodel Karlie Kloss partnered with Milk Bar for her line of do-good Klossies (originally Karlie’s Kookies), with a portion of each sale benefiting charities that include providing food to children and supporting up and coming young fashion designers.
There’s nothing sweeter than helping move New York to a better (and more giving) place!
While Cobble Hill is an upscale and trendy neighborhood, many people move to the area attracted by the slightly lower cost of living than in other comparable Brooklyn neighborhoods nearby. As an upscale neighborhood, the prices are by no means cheap, but rather slightly lower than in other similar neighborhoods in Brooklyn. For old world charm in New York City with all the conveniences Manhattanites crave, Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill is a great place to live.
