Having a reliable mover relocate you is a dream come true. You pick one of the top moving companies NYC. They explain the moving plan and act according to it. And before you know it, you and your possessions are safely relocated. Heaven. But, as it is with all good things, this rarely happens. In most cases, there are going to be some minor bumps with your movers during relocation. You will argue about the moving plan or you will not like the price, but nothing big. Unfortunately, sometimes there is a big problem that can seriously jeopardize or completely ruin your move. In that case, you need to know the ins and outs of settling disputes with movers. Luckily, we are here to help.
Step 0: Prepare for potential disputes
The best way of settling disputes with movers is to have a few of them as possible. While this may seem redundant to most of you, it is still important to mention. There are ways in which you can and always should prepare for potential disputes with movers. These preparations do not take much effort and they are essential for a decent moving experience. As we say to all of our clients, proper packing is important. But, knowing how to work with movers is vital.
Find good movers
It is hard to overstate how important it is that you find good Queens movers to work with. Even though it takes you longer and you need to spend your money. Avoiding bad or fraudulent movers is very well worth the time and money spent. Only by working with experienced, reliable movers will you reduce potential disputes to a minimum. If they have good reviews and have been in business for a long time, you can rest assured that they will do whatever they can to make your relocation as cost-effective and safe as possible. And, as you will soon learn, this is a huge load off your mind.
Moving contract
There are numerous steps to finding good movers, so we will not go over them here. What we will mention is that you need to read the moving contract carefully. Most people simply take the paper and sign it without reading. They ask “Is this the standard moving contact?” And, if the answer is yes, they sign without hesitation. Now, unless you are working movers that you know are reliable, this is extremely dangerous and stupid. What you need to do is to read each part of the moving contract carefully. Get legal counsel if you need to, but make sure that you understand what you are agreeing to. Your moving contact is your best tool for settling disputes with movers.
Step 1: Settling disputes with movers
Ok, so you’ve run into a problem and you need to settle a dispute with your movers. Should you start screaming and threatening them? Of course not. Should you start praying to ancient gods that something bad happens to them? Well, you can… But, as far as we understand it, you shouldn’t count on that either. What you need to do is approach this calmly and methodically.
Arm yourself
The first thing to do is to prepare yourself. Remember, if this dispute goes to court it won’t be about what you say but about what you can prove. Therefore, if there are any damages to your items, take pictures. If there are any violations of the contract, get evidence. Correspondence, voice mails, everything that you can get your hands on. If you start doing this later you will find much less. So start doing this the moment you realize that something is wrong.
Understand your situation
The next thing to do is to understand your situation. Is completely settling this dispute the first thing you need to take care of? Moving is a complicated project, especially if you move to NYC from abroad. There are usually multiple things that you need to do at the same time. Therefore, make sure that you and your possessions are safe and sound (if possible) and only then start dealing with your movers. Know your priorities.
Be firm and explicit
Once you start settling disputes with movers you need to be firm and explicit. Explain to them what has happened and what they have done. You don’t have to shout, but you must be assertive. Outline the problem loud and clear an make sure that they understand the situation. If you feel that they are avoiding, try to talk with them by online chat. That way you will have the following correspondence to use in court, if necessary.
Step 2: Going to court
If we’ve come to step 2, that means that you are stuck with some really bad movers. Most moving companies will admit their mistake and happily pay or restore you for any inconvenience. But, there are the bad ones that make their money out of scamming and tricking people. If you’ve had the bad luck of working with them, and they won’t budge, here is what you need to do.
Legal representation
Talk with a lawyer. There are some ways that you can settle this dispute without going to court. But, you will need the advice and the presence of a lawyer for the moving company to take you seriously. If you’ve done all the things we mentioned, your lawyer should have a pretty good case. This should be a big enough treat for your movers to settle this out of court. If not, oh well. Sometimes in life, you simply need to use the legal system. Especially if you’ve been preparing for that. But, keep in mind that courts are expensive. Sometimes it can be easier to simply cut your losses and move on with your life. Make sure to weigh this out with your lawyer carefully before you proceed.
