Should you help tenants move out?

Being a landlord comes with many responsibilities and having to make decisions pretty often. When your tenants are moving out and leaving your apartment, it can be a stressful time for everyone. You’re worried about new tenants and they are worried about their future home. You might be thinking of making this process easier for your tenants and giving them a hand, but you’re struggling to decide. So, we’re here to help you figure out if you should help tenants move out or not.

What age are your tenants?

If you’re wondering whether you should help tenants move out, you should think if they actually need your help. In case your tenants are young professionals, they can probably handle the move on their own. However, if you are renting the apartment to seniors, you should consider giving them a hand.

Elderly tenants might not be able to handle the move by themselves, especially if they have no one to help them. So, you could help them find senior citizen moving companies or help them yourself. Either way, you’ll be doing them a favor and they will surely be thankful.

Did your tenants ask you for help?

As we’ve said, something that can help you decide if you should assist your tenants when they’re moving out is figuring out if your tenants actually want and need your help. The clearest sign that they would like your assistance is if they ask you for help.

No matter their age, your tenants might be unable to handle the entire move on their own. If so, you can decide if you want to do them a favor and help them move. Remember that this could be as simple as helping them find packing supplies for the move.

What is your relationship like?

If you and your tenants are friendly and you get along well, maybe you could give them a hand. Of course, a good relationship with tenants doesn’t mean you need to give them a hand. However, you might be willing to make moving out easier for them if they are your friends. If, however, you aren’t on the best terms, you don’t have to help your tenants move out.

How to help tenants move out

If you decide to help your tenants relocate, there are a few things you could do. This doesn’t mean that you have to act as their professional mover – you can simply offer some advice and recommendations. 

• Provide them with packing supplies if you have some lying around.
• Help them find the best movers or recommend a Chelsea moving company to them.
• If you have the time, you can even help them with packing.
• In case you’re renting another property or know someone who is, you can recommend that place to your tenants.

Do what feels right

So, we’ve given you a few pointers and questions you should ask yourself when you’re trying to decide if you should help tenants move out. But in essence, the most important thing is to do what feels right. You shouldn’t feel pressure to help them or refrain from offering help if that’s what you want to do. At the end of the day, it’s all about communication so you can even ask the tenants if they want your help.
