Packing Paintings for Moving

Packing paintings for a move requires careful planning to ensure they remain undamaged during transit. Since artwork is often delicate and valuable, taking the necessary precautions is crucial. Whether you’re moving across town or to a new state, using the right materials and techniques will help prevent damage. If you’re working with trusted local movers, they can provide additional guidance on protecting your artwork throughout the relocation process.

Gather the Right Supplies

To properly pack paintings, you’ll need sturdy materials designed to safeguard them against pressure, moisture, and impact. High-quality packing paper should be used to cover the surface, while bubble wrap adds an extra layer of protection. Painter’s tape works well for securing wrapping materials without leaving adhesive residue, and corner protectors help prevent frames from chipping or cracking. For highly valuable or oversized artwork, a wooden crate may be the best option for extra security.

Protect the Painting Surface

Before wrapping, place a sheet of packing paper over the entire painting to shield it from dust and scratches. Avoid newspapers, as the ink can transfer onto the surface and cause damage. If the painting has a glass covering, apply painter’s tape in an “X” pattern across the glass to reduce the risk of shattering. For framed pieces, attaching corner protectors helps absorb impact during handling.

Wrap the Painting

Once the surface is secure, wrap the entire painting in bubble wrap, covering the edges as well. Be sure not to apply too much pressure, as excessive wrapping can cause strain on the frame or canvas. Instead, wrap it snugly enough to keep it secure without pressing too hard on the artwork. Use painter’s tape to hold the layers in place without affecting the surface of the frame or canvas.

Choose the Right Box

A properly sized box is essential for keeping paintings secure. The box should be slightly larger than the artwork, allowing space for padding on all sides. Before placing the painting inside, add cushioning material, such as foam or crumpled packing paper, to the bottom of the box. Once the painting is in place, fill any remaining gaps with additional padding to prevent movement. This reduces the risk of the painting shifting during transport, which can lead to cracks or other damage.

Label and Transport

Once packed, the box should be securely sealed with strong packing tape. Clearly labeling it with “Fragile” and “Handle with Care” ensures that movers take the necessary precautions while transporting it. If the painting is of high value, consider obtaining insurance coverage for added protection. Professional movers experienced in handling artwork can provide specialized care to ensure your paintings arrive safely at their destination.
