Pack Records for Moving

Moving your vinyl collection is stressful – I get it. If you make one wrong move, your favorite album might end up warped or cracked. I’ve been there, and with help from a skilled moving team during my last relocation, I learned how to properly protect my records. Here’s what worked for me when packing my own collection of over 200 vinyl records.

Choosing the Right Packing Materials

Don’t skimp on packing materials – your records will thank you. Grab sturdy boxes in different sizes, but stick with smaller ones for records since they get heavy fast. I prefer record mailers if you can find them, but any small, sturdy box works fine. Bubble wrap and packing paper are lifesavers for protecting each record.

Throw in some dividers or cardboard pieces to keep everything standing upright during the drive. Make sure to slap a “FRAGILE” label on each box – most movers will actually pay attention to this. Trust me, buying decent packing supplies now is cheaper than replacing damaged records later.

Sorting and Organizing Your Records

Before you pack a single record, sort your collection – you’ll thank yourself when unpacking. I organized mine by genre (rock, jazz, classical) and then alphabetically by artist. It made setting up my new listening space so much easier. Jot down a quick list of what’s what while you’re sorting, especially if you have rare or valuable albums.

Use some folder dividers or even pieces of cardboard to separate different sections. Take a few extra minutes to double-check your organization before boxing everything up. This bit of planning saved me hours of frustration when I was tired and surrounded by boxes in my new place.

Properly Wrapping Individual Records

Each record needs its own protection – this isn’t the time to cut corners. Lay out a piece of acid-free paper or bubble wrap on a flat surface. Put your record in the middle and fold the wrapping around it snugly but not too tight (you don’t want to warp it). Secure the edges with a bit of tape.

For my really valuable records, I kept them in their sleeves and then wrapped them separately. For extra protection, I slipped wrapped records into plastic sleeves before boxing. Yes, it takes time, but not as much time as hunting down replacements for damaged favorites.

Packing Records in Boxes Safely

How you pack your boxes makes all the difference. After wrapping dozens of records, don’t ruin your hard work with sloppy boxing:

  1. Use sturdy boxes: I learned the hard way that old, flimsy boxes collapse easily. Invest in new ones.
  2. Fill all gaps: Stuff empty spaces with packing paper or bubble wrap. Records that shift during transit often end up damaged.
  3. Keep them vertical: Always stand records upright like they would be on your shelf. Laying them flat risks warping.

Tape thoroughly: Run packing tape along all seams and reinforce the bottom of each box. These things get surprisingly heavy.

Labeling and Securing Packed Boxes

Clear labels save massive headaches on moving day. Grab a thick marker and write precisely what’s in each box – be specific like “Jazz Records A-M” rather than just “Records.” Number your boxes and keep a master list of what’s where.

Don’t be stingy with tape when sealing boxes – records are heavy and can break through the bottom of boxes. Stack them carefully in the moving truck with heavy boxes on the bottom. Never put anything heavy on your record boxes, no matter how sturdy they seem.
